About our cause
Newbury Soup Kitchen provides a much loved and valued service to people in our community experiencing homelessness and vulnerably housed through food, support and outreach.
We need your help so we can continue to provide a vital service offering freshly cooked, nutritious food and outreach support for local homeless people. The meals we offer are at the heart of what we do, allowing us to connect and build relationships with some of the most vulnerable people in our community. This allows us to gain trust, begin to better understand individuals’ circumstances and support them most effectively.
Initially we work with each person to support their immediate needs. As well as food we will provide the opportunity to sit, chat and feel safe. We have basic provisions including warm clothes and toiletries as well as tents, sleeping bags and roll mats for rough sleepers. We provide laundry and shower tokens, and offer haircuts, to ensure our clients are able to access essential services to maintain their health and dignity.
A local community nurse makes weekly visits to our sessions. She spends time with those who may not find it easy to engage with medical services through more traditional routes and can help identify undiagnosed health issues.
With compassion and understanding we foster relationships and connections that can empower individuals to make more positive choices. We offer help to those struggling with mental health, drugs, alcohol and debt issues. In addition to our outreach sessions, we are busy supporting people every day and have strong connections with local services and a wonderful network of experienced volunteers.
The initial, practical support of a hot meal, much needed sleeping bag or warm hat can be the vital first step in a long journey to a more secure and stable future. People often come to us feeling there is ‘no hope’. It is vital we show them that there are people who care and there is hope for a positive future.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Meryl Praill
