About our cause
The Newbury Community Resource Centre (registered charity no. 1082243) helps local people in West Berkshire by providing furniture, household goods, training and services to support independent and sustainable living. We also help people to develop work and social skills, and encourage environmentally beneficial activities. We do this by running a range of projects for the local community, including:
The Community Furniture Project, a furniture re-use project, passing on unwanted, good quality furniture, electrical and other household goods to those at an economic disadvantage.
Our Training and Community Support Centre in Newbury offers volunteering, placement and training opportunities in a range of practical, skills-based activities linked to our core activities, including woodwork, re-upholstery, electrical repair, bicycle repair, furniture restoration, forklift truck driving, warehousing and customer service. Our services are aimed primarily at those in our community who are disabled in some way, including people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health issues and also marginalised young people.
The Pulling Together Project, based in Newbury, which helps people with mental health problems in the local community. We assist people to overcome problems of isolation by providing a safe, caring and supportive environment where they can meet each day and take part in activities with others who understand the issues they have to cope with.
The ROAR (Rangers on Active Response) group meets every week day, and with the help of two full-time support workers, they engage in outdoor activities such as footpath clearance in the Newbury area and helping to grow vegetables and fruit at our local food growing project near Kingsclere in Hampshire. The ROAR Project is widely acknowledged as an example of the positive impact people with very complex disabilities can have in their community when they are well supported by trained and experienced staff and volunteers.
Mixed Ability Football Club: The club was set up very informally in 2013, primarily to enable our physically disabled and learning disabled volunteers to have the chance to play sport, and has grown organically since then to include a mix of ages and ability levels. Players benefit from their interactions together, with the able-bodied members gaining an understanding of disabilities and learning how to behave tolerantly and kindly towards their team mates. Players would like to establish the team on a more formal basis and have recently joined the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Inclusion League.
Our Request
We are always in need of assistance from donors to help us to cover our essential core costs and this is especially so at the moment, when funds from central and local government are being cut back. We would be very grateful if you could consider choosing to support our work through the West Berkshire Lottery; and thereby contribute towards our valuable work with those in need in West Berkshire.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Kindest regards
Kelvin Hughes
